LANDMARK DESIGNATION WORK PROGRAM,
2000-2001, initial discussion to establish the Landmark Designation
Work Program for Fiscal Year 2000-2001.?
A working session to update the List of Potential Landmark Designations,
and to identify up to eight sites for the Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board=s consideration of initiation of
landmark designation.? (Note:? This
item was not heard at the July 5, 2000 Landmarks Board Hearing, due to a lack
of quorum.)
Speakers:???? Jean Kortum, Chandler
McCoy, Paul Adamson, Charles Chase, Dan Weaver, Judi Nihei, Winnie Siegel, F.
Joseph Butler, Archie Green, Susan Goldstein, Peter Goldstein, Moses Corrette
(Staff) and Mary Koonts (Staff)
Neil Hart,
Preservation
Coordinator:??????????? P????????? Briefed the Board and public on the
objective for this hearing, which is to update the list of potential landmark
designations, and explained the handout.
Board Action
and Comments:????? P????????? After hearing comments and
recommendations from the public:
Vice President
Kelley commented that he thinks the Board should begin by reaffirming
priorities set by the Board last year - 1) to directly address and engage the
cultural and social history of San Francisco (believes this is critical and
important for the good of preservation, because it opens the process and makes
it more involving); 2) go into neighborhoods that have not been represented and
under-represented in the program to date; 3) involve communities of people
(ethnic communities, communities of interest, cultural communities); 4) public
spaces / common grounds; 5) architecturally significant buildings.? It was moved by Kelley (seconded by Magrane)
to accept and reaffirm the five priorities listed above.? The vote was unanimous.
P????????? President
Reidy commented that the process is somewhat frustrating, because they tried to
get the Landmark Designation? Program
moving over the last few years, to get it going from where it had not been
active.? A lot of energy and interest
has been unleashed, listing 25 to 40 possible landmarks all to start moving on
quickly and the bottleneck seems to be this issue that Staff said they can
really only process about eight a year (knowing that some take more time then
one year to process).
P????????? Commented on the wide range of choices.? A real issue is how do they decide how to go
forward with the numbers, and not lock themselves in to only the eight.
P????????? Board Member Magrane had concerns on
how to prioritize (form an internal committee or ask for Staff feedback?) on
what is an endangered specie? what is endangered or potentially on the demo
list?).
P????????? Board Member Kotas commented that in
his overview, there are seven or eight entries that he would call Acommunity@;
seven or eight entries that are Abrand name
buildings@; there=s a category of Adistricts@;
the smallest category Abuildings outside
the downtown area@.
P????????? It was unanimously agreed on by the
Board to remove the following properties from the potential list:
?1.??????? Golden
M. Roy residence
?3.??????? South
End Rowing Club
?4.??????? Dolphin
Club House
?6.??????? Booker
T. Washington Comm. Ctr.
?9.??????? The
Old Roadhouse
12.?????? Apollo Theater
15.?????? Dennis T. Sullivan House
30.?????? Ingleside Track
P????????? It was unanimously agreed on by the Board

(2694 McAllister St.)
10.?????? Ansel Adams House
25.?????? Goldman House
26.?????? House (2660 Divisadero St.)
Add:?? 1338 Filbert St. Cottages
P????????? It was unanimously agreed on by the
Board to separate and create a parallel list (historic districts / survey
areas) of the following:

P????????? The Board unanimously agreed to
