2220-2222 SACRAMENTO STREET, The Chambers Mansion, north side between Laguna and Buchanan Streets. Assessor's Block 0627, Lot 005 - Request for a Certificate of Appropriateness to legalize and expand an existing, street level front yard garage door opening from 16 feet to 18 feet. The subject Queen Anne with Gothic and Tuscan Ornament style, two-unit building is Landmark No. 119, listed in Here Today, and the City's 1976 Architectural Survey. This two-story plus attic wood frame, late 19th century residential building, is within an RH-2 (House, Two-Family) District and is in a 40-X Height and Bulk District.

Preliminary Recommendation: Approval with Conditions

  • After public comment, it was moved by Board Member Finwall (seconded by Skrondal) to accept Staff's recommendation and approve the Certificate of Appropriateness. The motion failed +4 -3. No further action was take by the Board.

National Register Nomination

(M. SNYDER: 415/575-6478)

5. 601 TOWNSEND STREET, The Baker & Hamilton Building, southeast corner of Townsend and 7th Streets. Assessor's Block 3799, Lot 1 - National Register Nomination - Built in 1905, the Baker & Hamilton Building was originally a warehouse for the Pacific Hardware and Steel Company, and is currently used for offices. The subject property is Landmark No. 193, is listed on the California Register, is listed in the "Here Today" survey (page 295), is designated as an "A" in the Heritage survey, and was included in the Planning Department's Architectural Survey of 1976. The subject property is within an M-2 (Heavy Industrial) District. The State Historic Preservation Office is seeking the Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board's comments on a proposed nomination to the National Register of Historic Places as part of San Francisco's role as Certified Local Government.

  • After public comment, it was moved by Board Member Maley (seconded by Skrondal) to support the nomination and recommend approval. The vote was unanimous.

Discussion and comment on the status of the Emporium Project. The Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board will consider writing a letter to the Redevelopment Agency, the Planning Department, or other appropriate parties. (Note: This item is continued from the September 1, 21 and October 6, 2004, Landmarks Board Hearings. At those hearings, public comment was taken, but, no action was taken by the Landmarks Board.)
